The Saab Swordfish MPA (Maritime Patrol Aircraft) is a highly versatile, long-range surveillance and multi-mission platform developed by Saab, leveraging the proven Bombardier Global 6000 ultra-long-range business jet airframe. First introduced in 2016, the Swordfish integrates Saab’s state-of-the-art mission systems to deliver a high-performance solution capable of addressing a broad spectrum of maritime and overland operational requirements. Its design emphasizes long endurance and operational efficiency, with an ability to remain airborne for up to 13 hours, a maximum range of approximately 4,400 nautical miles, and a long-range cruise speed of 360 knots, while its maximum speed reaches up to 450 knots. The aircraft operates effectively at altitudes up to 37,000 feet, providing a high-altitude perspective for both surveillance and strategic operations, while the Global 6000 platform ensures a smooth, reliable, and fuel-efficient flight experience even in extended missions.
The Swordfish MPA’s mission capabilities cover a comprehensive array of modern maritime and overland operations. It is fully equipped for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and anti-surface unit warfare (ASuW), providing the capability to detect, track, and, if necessary, engage hostile submarines or surface vessels. In addition, it supports combat search and rescue (CSAR), maritime intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), anti-piracy operations, exclusive economic zone (EEZ) monitoring, maritime counter-terrorism (MCT) missions, on-scene C4ISTAR, border protection, and special forces support operations. Saab’s advanced mission system enables these capabilities through an integrated suite that includes a 360° active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, a multistatic acoustic detection system, electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR) sensors with integrated laser designators, and a comprehensive command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR) suite. Together, these systems allow operators to maintain situational awareness over vast maritime or overland areas, rapidly process incoming intelligence, and coordinate real-time responses across multiple mission scenarios.
The Swordfish MPA is also highly flexible in terms of armament and payload. It features up to four NATO-compatible hardpoints under the wings, allowing it to carry an array of mission-specific payloads. These include up to six lightweight torpedoes for anti-submarine operations, anti-ship missiles such as the Saab RBS 15EF, and specialized pods for search-and-rescue or other tactical operations. This modular approach allows the Swordfish to switch seamlessly between combat, surveillance, and humanitarian missions, providing operators with a single platform capable of executing multiple roles without the need for multiple aircraft types.
From a strategic perspective, the Swordfish MPA offers a cost-effective and highly capable alternative to larger, more expensive airliner-based maritime patrol platforms such as the Boeing P-8 Poseidon. Its combination of long endurance, extended operational range, and advanced sensor and weapon systems make it a formidable asset for modern naval and coastal defense forces, as well as for nations seeking to strengthen their maritime situational awareness without the high acquisition and operational costs associated with larger platforms. By combining the reliability and efficiency of the Global 6000 airframe with Saab’s cutting-edge mission systems, the Swordfish MPA delivers a balanced, high-performance solution capable of meeting the evolving demands of both conventional and asymmetric maritime threats.
