Perfect for use in games and simulation projects.

The Atlantique 2 (ATL2) is a French maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) aircraft developed for the French Navy. Designed in the 1980s as a successor to the earlier Bréguet Br.1150 Atlantic, the ATL2 was built to meet the changing needs of naval operations, especially in submarine detection, maritime surveillance, and intelligence gathering. Although it inherited the same basic airframe design as its predecessor, the ATL2 is a significantly upgraded aircraft with more modern systems, sensors, and weapons.

The Atlantique 2 made its first flight on May 8, 1981, and officially entered service in 1989. A total of 28 aircraft were produced, all delivered to the French Navy. Its design focuses on endurance, versatility, and the ability to perform a wide variety of missions over sea and land. These include tracking submarines, locating and identifying surface ships, guiding naval strike forces, performing search-and-rescue operations, and gathering signals and electronic intelligence. The ATL2 is also capable of carrying out precision strikes using advanced guided munitions.

One of the aircraft's most important upgrades compared to the original Atlantic is its mission system and onboard sensors. The ATL2 is equipped with a powerful radar system providing 360-degree surveillance and the ability to detect small targets on land or at sea, even in difficult weather conditions. It also features advanced sonar processing systems for detecting and tracking submarines using sonobuoys dropped from the aircraft. The electronic warfare suite includes sensors for intercepting and analyzing radar and communication signals, giving the aircraft strong intelligence and reconnaissance capabilities.

The ATL2 can carry a variety of weapons to complete its missions. These include lightweight torpedoes for attacking submarines, anti-ship missiles for engaging surface vessels, and laser-guided bombs for precision strikes against land or naval targets. All of these weapons are carried internally in the aircraft’s spacious bomb bay, helping reduce drag and improve aerodynamic efficiency during long-range missions.

In terms of performance, the Atlantique 2 is powered by two turboprop engines, providing efficient fuel consumption and reliable performance during extended patrols. The aircraft has a maximum speed of approximately 600 km/h (373 mph), a range of more than 7,300 km (4,500 miles), and can remain airborne for over 12 hours. A typical crew consists of 12 personnel, including pilots, tactical coordinators, systems operators, and observers.

To keep the aircraft effective against modern threats, the French Navy launched a major upgrade program for the ATL2 fleet. This modernization includes the latest-generation radar, new mission computers, upgraded acoustic processing systems, and improved navigation and communication equipment. These enhancements significantly increase the aircraft's effectiveness in both anti-submarine warfare and overland intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions.

Thanks to these continuous improvements, the Atlantique 2 (ATL2) remains one of Europe's most capable maritime patrol aircraft. The French Navy plans to keep the ATL2 in service until at least 2035, ensuring it continues to play a central role in naval defense and overseas operations.
