The Bell 207 Sioux Scout, developed in 1963, was an experimental light attack helicopter built to explore the concept of a dedicated armed scout aircraft for the U.S. Army. Although it never entered production, it introduced several key innovations that became standard features in later attack helicopters.

The 207 combined a slim tandem cockpit, stub wings for weapons, and a chin-mounted gun turret—layout choices that were groundbreaking at the time. It was also one of the first helicopters designed from the start for armed reconnaissance rather than being a modified utility airframe. This made it a true precursor to purpose-built attack helicopters.

While the Sioux Scout itself was only a testbed, it directly influenced the design philosophy of later aircraft such as the Bell AH-1 Cobra. Many of its features-tandem seating, narrow fuselage, integrated weapons systems, and improved pilot visibility—became defining characteristics of modern attack rotorcraft.
