DESCRIPTION

Reconstruction of the Copper Basin, also known as the Bronze Laver, one of the sacred furnishings of the biblical Tabernacle.

According to Exodus 30:18–21, the basin was made of copper and placed between the Tabernacle and the altar of burnt offering. Aaron and his sons were instructed to wash their hands and feet with water from it before entering the Tent of Meeting or performing their priestly duties.

Unlike the Altar of Incense and several other Tabernacle objects, the biblical text does not provide exact dimensions, shape, or decorative details for the basin. This model is therefore a historically informed interpretation, created to visualize its probable function and position within the sanctuary.

The reconstruction presents a bronze vessel supported by a dedicated stand, designed to contain water for ritual washing and purification. Its form draws inspiration from ancient Near Eastern metalwork while remaining faithful to the basic biblical description. I have added a second smaller basin for washing the feets.

This object should not be confused with the much larger Bronze Sea of Solomon’s Temple, which is described in 1 Kings 7 as a circular vessel measuring ten cubits across and standing on twelve bronze oxen.
