My points about CGTRADER update.

Discussion started by IndieArt

IMHO after recent update CGTRADER transformed even more into 3DPRINTER, which I don't like at all, but it's your site and you can do what ever you want. But at least few things should be done better.

In newsletter you are talking about separating 3d printable models and CG models.
Yes, 3D printable models are now separated into a dedicated section, but why they are still in CG section?
At least STL only models should be removed from CG section.

- Searching menu / UI  is confusing and buggy especially from point of someone who wants to buy CG models.

For example if I click "Buy 3d models" then click "Character / Human" and check Low-poly filter i will get also animals, like it's not enough that there are also scanned Mao statues in Lowpoly section.
(publishers should not be able to check Lowpoly without specifying polycount)

- Where is Adult content settings? I want to see Adult content when searching thru catalog.

- Why is jewelry in CG Character section? Like it's not enough that this section is spammed with scanned statues of Mao.

- If I click on "Show all Artist 3D models" in Artist profile, then click on second page in pagination it will take me back to all 3D models section.

- missing thumbnails, super low quality models, buying license from kids etc.

Have to agree about 3D printing as primary focus of CGTrader. CG models are more important than 3D print models and at the very least should be the default setting in search engine not printable models.

Was uploading a new model and noticed the following negatives:

- images still get mixed by upload time instead of being arranged by file name (01_01, 01_02, etc.)
- price discount is no longer available in product publishing page
- can't check that it is 3D print ready and it does not appear in 3D print search results
- the fact that 3D print ready models are opened up in "GET PRINTED" mode makes the site extremely confusing as to how to just buy the 3D model

I agree also. I am also concerned with some priced models being obviously copyright infringements (priced characters from famous movies, for instance), and the spamming of the site with too many models that can only reduce the site credibility. I'm not saying that all models would have to be tested and approved before being uploaded, but that people spamming the site should be encouraged to change their behavior.
Or maybe the quantity of free stuff (or even of priced models per week, for instance) per member could at least be limited.
I am concerned that the site which started as a great opportunity to change the 3D-models market rules is focusing almost only on 3D-printing and losing all credibility for 3D models.

The issue with model spamming (as with spamming forums) is the points system which rewards this behavior.

I mean, just look at "Joey and Jordan Bennett" - these kids not only publish low quality primitive models, but post a new forum thread about each and every new upload for no apparent reason (with exclamation marks, of course). Does not make the site look professional whatsoever (especially when their "Designer rank" - thanks to constant spamming - is Nr.10).

But that is another issue which existed before the new update.

What I hate the most about the new site structure is the fact that it fragmented the marked by splitting print-ready and 3D models into completely different categories and now you are forced to upload your 3D models twice - as 3D print (STL, OBJ and WRL formats only - no ZIPs and no textures - not sure why multicolor printing option is even available if you can't upload WRL/OBJ with textures) and as CG model (every format is allowed). It is beyond my mental comprehension skills as to how does that make CGTrader a better place than it used to be.

Not only does this make the site navigation unnecessarily confusing (you want to find a good only car model, but you end up with 0 results because the search is set to 3D print as default), but you also get duplicating identical products in both model categories.

Good point about the quality of some models. When I see some people just finish a tutorial and post the result on the store, I feel that something is wrong. This should be definitelly moderated on some higher level and there should be some quality filter to sort the models. I'm not saying that my models are the best but I feel bad when I see my products surrounded by tons of garbage. It might be free but still garbage. And seeing some people at the top ranks with lots of useless stuff and other nonsence, just because they have lots of it with no actual sales or downloads, that's just not right for a website that should focus on professionality and should take the stuff a bit more seriously.

And another thing I noticed is how models which are under Editorial license can be sold as 3D printable.
Isn't that obvious violation of copyright?

I agree on "representative" reputation ranking having a problem at this point (relative to veteran 3D artist). Probably receiving rep points for posting a forum treat should be disabled (for some users). There's no problem being enthusiastic and post frequently but it can get a strategy for ranking up at this point. I like enthusiasm and want to promote it as much as possible, but I doubt it would do any good at this point.

Sales and positive votes should ultimately prevail in establishing rank in a professional marketplace. There's people with many jeers of devotion spend on getting as good as they are. Seeing them get outranked (systematically wise) bay beginners work is indeed questionable. For sake of good marketing the best artists should be in front and be representative for the community. (this would also be beneficial for all community members)

Ps. I discovered a bug, if you enter on the homepage and click the CG models button and then click on categories in hoping to get an overview of everything posted, then al of a sudden de menu changes to the 3D print menu. (CG models button remains active regardless 3D print menu being active)

I like this place very much but I hope to see CG models be better represented. Keep repeating myself with saying this site should divide in two marketplaces and share a 50/50 front page space. I don't say the backend functionality should divide also (which is the case right now). It is perfectly possible to ad a category function sow uploaders can select to witch marketplace they want to add a given item. You can add a file selector system sow one can select curtain files already uploaded but add different images, decryptions and price for 3d print. so use one upload page and provide the publishing functions to the designers themselves. (just my suggestion)
