Textures from DAZ not rendering in Maya?

Discussion started by llast-ffirst1234

I added textures to a character model in DAZ, then when I open the character in Maya and render it, the textures don't work. The character just turns gray where the textures are supposed to be. Why is this happening and how can I fix it?

The character models consist of several surfaces / polygongroups (e.g. for torso, face, arms, legs etc.) you will have to assign the textures too (have a look at the "surfaces" - tab in DAZStudio).
Can't tell you how to do that in Maya though since I don't use it.

Sorry forgot you could try to export it as obj file in DAZ with the option "Write Material library" (tick the box). Under it choose "Original Maps". Then at least the textures work right away. Normal maps and other maps must be assigned though.

The normal map issue is a limitation of the OBJ file format. Depending on how the export app deals with normal maps, they will either be ignored or interpreted as a bump map. Since most software uses a unique node or material parameter for normal maps vs. standard bump maps, they will not import correctly.

In the case of DAZ Studio it looks to be the exporter to be the issue since same happens with FBX export there - but there no bump maps get exported. If I export/import my models between Zbrush and Blender they work fine. @llast-ffirst1234: Why don't you just render your character directly in DAZ Studio with e.g. Iray?
