Real World IP issues

Discussion started by Seismic3D

Hello everyone,

Having seen the latest insane policy at one of the competing sites (The3DStudio) - one of the oldest longest established stock sites - can we have any assurance that nothing similar is planned here.

For those that do not know T3DS today removed all real-world items that could possibly have any patent/copyright/IP claim against them - so all real-world named brand items.  These represent a high % of the sales of stock models.

Any thoughts?

I am not a CGTrader member, but I think there are alternatives to copyright issues. Sites like TS and others have an Editorial License which allows you to publish models even if you are not the owner of the copyright of the brand. And TS, as a big company, is on the spotlight, yet there haven't been any problems with copyright after introducing that license. I don't know the reason why T3DS has not benefitted from that type of license, but again I don't know why the design of the website hasn't changed in a decade. There have been many strange decisions made there. In any case, until a brand issues a DMCA against their own products we are free to sell them under normal licenses. After that, apparently, a different type of license would suffice.

All that is, of course, to my understanding. I do not have any formal training in law.

I also note that the blog entries at T3DS crit-ing this move have been removed. This is a sad day for T3DS. On the plus side this now means that CGT is without doubt the 2nd biggest seller of stock 3D :)

Yes, it is a great opportunity for this website! I had a lowest price guarantee with T3DS but now that my products there are gone I can even lower the prices here. New opportunities!

Yep. T3DS removed my blog post there. The are screwed. Wish I could delete all my models from there. But that stupid MLP agreement does not allow me to do that. All I can do is just sabotage the files there. Leave the product page, but remove the dowloadable files.

Hopefully the CGT team can confirm us soon that they are not planning to do the same.

3D Squirrel are still selling the full range of models. What do you base that on, SuperCigale?

3Dsquirrel sells all kind of model, I am a member of 3dsquirrel and I received an email to review to all my models with Copyright; If they are not fixed (coorected ?) from March 1, they will be removed . At least, 3DSuirrel has had the courtesy to inform us before removing our models.

Thanks for the info. I don't sell at 3D squirrel at the moment. Can you ask them if they've had some sort of legal notice to do this? Seems a co-incidence they do this the same time as T3DS.

On 3D Squirrel they just started to rename models, removing branded preview renders and so on.They are very small 3d shop so no big deal for me. Like the3Dstudio with falling sells last year. Problem will be if CGtrader, Turbosquid will do the same..

I have also asked 3DSquirrel for comments if they was threatened by someone or why they are doing it but no answear about this situation ... strange...
