I usually use just standard HD size for previews (1920x1080). Seems to work fine. The thumbnail preview is the only one I'll create at a special size, depending on how I want it to appear. Typically, that will contain a white background to match the website at square file size. I might use 1080x1080 for that one.

Hi!
1920x1080 is a standard format :) but actually the main preview crops it (the preview picture in the store is just 284x223 pixel!). When you hover it with the mouse, a second preview picture appears.
I like to use 1920x1080 because it is the standard for the web but you are free to chose your favorite format. The preview picture can be 1920x1080 BUT you should draw a safe area (invisible. guide lines in your image editor) and then see what will be visible when the store's layout will crop it.
Good luck with your projects!

Nope :) the preview picture has the same format of the upload in the product's gallery. It is provisionally cropped only in the store layout (the store, with a lot of different models and preview), not in the product's page
