Creating a 3D Printable model

Discussion started by martini

Hi there everyone.
I have been searching for some time on proper techniques on creating 3D printable models, but I don't quite seem to understand how to do it right, so I decided to ask my question to the community here at CGTrader. :)

I am creating a custom iPhone case in Cinema 4D and Zbrush. The base mesh model is being made in Cinema and I am adding all the ornate bits in Zbrush (as you would expect...). My issue is the following:
For some reason when I am sculpting on my base mesh the brush goes through to both sides (i.e. when sculpting on the front on the case, the details 'see through' on the inside which is not desirable.) Is this because the distance between the front and back faces is too small, or is it something else entirely?

Furthermore, when I am finished with my sculpting, do I just use Decimation Master to make my model have a normal amount of polygons and export it for print or is there another technique?

I am looking forward to hearing your guys' advice and ideas. Thanks in advance! :)

Hi Martin
In regards to your Zbrush question, go into your brush menu then automasking turn on backface masking and that should solve that issue. The decimation master does a pretty good job, there are other standalone apps out there, meshlab is a free open source poly cruncher and works pretty well, if its for 3D print the polycount isnt going to be that big of a problem.

this video is how to setup 3ds max for 3d printing. It will be useful and informative even if you use different application.

The reason why you have the 2 sided sculpt is because the thickness of your mesh is too short and the brush affects both.
