Fantasy game weapon low poly models - (Newbie Question pls)

Discussion started by imlon

Hey guys, I just started making stuffs for cgtrader and needed some advice coz I'm not really sure what to make that sells.

So I started with something i random stylized/fancy weapons like this - "Yeah I play a lot of mmorpg so, I enjoy making this kind of stuffs"

Is this a good niche to start with? Coz I currently have a very slow laptop right now, and wanted to earn some extra $$ to buy a better 1 for detail carving and faster map baking.

Thanks in advance :D

Edit: Another question is, does 2k poly/vert is considered low poly? coz i saw a bucket labeled as low poly with 2k verts/poly.

I believe weapons are not really a niche. Generally there are a lot of weapons around. According to the last gctrader statistics, weapons are even a "poor performer" and the weapons category oversupplied. If this is true for any kind of weapon... I don't know. Despite of that, I like your weapons (especially the plague doctor dagger https://www.cgtrader.com/3d-models/weapon-military/melee/plague-doctor-dagger-low-poly-an-material-ready) and hope people will buy them.

As for low poly, I think gctrader considers everything below 20'000 polygons as lowpoly (at least that's the limit for their low poly challenges if I remember correctly). But in the end it's a question of the model's purpose. I would say if the model is used in a game, 20'000 polygons can't be called low poly. And if the model is used in a mobile or VR game, 20'000 polygons would be clearly too much unless there is not much else in that game.

Thank you so much for the reply and kind words, this information will help me and others, maybe i should try making Halloween decorations for a while, and see if it's actually better than weapons.
