3D Scans of mine

Discussion started by 3dscan

Hello all, I am posting these images here to do some market research. Currently I sell my models on a different platform. I understand that this community is quite transparent, and open, so here is the deal. I am unwilling to make a change to another sales site, unless I can be sure I will be able to sell my products, as I spent quite a bit of money on my scanning investments, and time into producing my work. However, if there are buyers interested in buying high resolution 3D scans for Reference, Modelling, or Retopology, and High Resolution texture creation from 3D scan data that is both accurate to form, and in most cases, extremely detailed, reply here, and let me know your thoughts. Also, to the creators of this site, why not create an exclusive license, in this instance, if you put your model up for sale, and it has yet to be sold, the client could have a choice on whether he can pay a much higher premium for exclusive rights to the item. Thank you all, I hope you enjoy what I have uploaded for you. You can see my work at https://www.facebook.com/transposescans

You would probably be whey better off, if you sell your 3D stock items on all major stock markets, and not sell out anywhere exclusively.

Apart from that critic I would indeed be interested to buy exclusive, if your price is good, but I consider following facts. That indeed you may have purchased a relatively expensive 3D scanning rig, those scanners are dropping in price really fast and the marked is going to get flooded with 3D scan data and very soon everyone has a 3D scanner in his hand.

For example, even smart phones are becoming capable of scanning relatively hi res 3D data. (https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=3d+scaning+smartphone) There are also plenty of online services offering good 3D Photo modeling, and there is also good open source software. These don't get to the mesh density of what you offer but when you combine 3D photo modeling with tools like (https://www.google.be/?gfe_rd=cr&ei=chHeVJfbNpbAVNOfgrgJ&gws_rd=ssl#q=images+to+normal+maps&spell=1), then you get good enough materials for games. (Your scanner is probably best suited for objects with lots of small detailed features, where photo modeling is not an option, e.g. things like reliefs in old roman architecture etc.)

I suspect your targeting game dev. because I see no one 3D printing sewer plates? So your mesh density would eventually also need to be retopologized and baked down to normal maps. You can make the argument that you would have higher resolution input (then photo modeling), but most 3D game defs. also have 3D modeling/sculpting tools to add some details back that maybe where not captured during normal map conversion. Things I consider in baying something like this exclusive are; The price, demand for the items, how many conversion work involved, quality of scan data and how hard it would be for me to get that data myself.

The sewer plates I would consider doable because I have an 18 Megapixel DSLR with polarized filter and confident that a combination of photo modeling/normal map conversion would deliver good results for games in this regard. (do not have these sort of plates in my neighborhood though)

So how much would it cost to buy the 17 plates 3D data/textures with full exclusivity?

Good points. A couple of things, photo scanning is great, but it requires some skill to create the LOD I am getting. Also consider processing time. I can do scanning with an IPhone in a pinch, but the detail level is nowhere near that of a DSLR. The resolution of the textures associated with the scan can be very high. Scanning will be an ordinary thing, but I think we are at least ten years out before just anyone will be picking up any detail compare able in the consumer market. I am not interested in retopology or texture creation, I provide raw data with high res maps included. The purpose of this is because of application. It can be applied later for individual needs not limited to what I decide the data should be used for. Exclusively if I were to sell the models in a pack, it would be based on hours spent, And model quality. As these are one of a kind, market rate for scanning will apply with a slight discount.

At $60 an hour, roughly 10 hours of processing per scan, you are talking about $12,000 for 20 scans with a 20% discount making it $9,500. We will start there. If I were to charge a client for a custom scan, the price would be around 1,000 for each raw scan with minimal cleanup, nearly double the price that I am offering. If I were to sell each of these scans with non exclusive licenses, I would charge around 60 per model. After 10 sales on each scan I earn my 60 hourly.

Alternatively, a non exclusive license for a collection of 20 of the same scans would be $480, but anyone can buy.

The one of a kind cannot fully go up here as a different person can scan the same physical thing and also start selling (if it is not some physical art made by an artist that claims ownership), but that's not the point here.

To recap on all, you are mostly in favor of selling man hours as a 3D scanning operator, delivering raw 3D scan data and not develop specific products targeting curtain platforms?

Then this is probably the best place to do just that and more. As you said, it's a very open place here, so you can sell your service here just as good as any where ells.

You can display your work here and store/make available your self initiated 3D scans. In addition, noting stops you from adding to your descriptions (below the models display) that you can also do scans on demand and sell the data sets with full exclusivity if necessary, contact for more info and so on.

In addition, you can also (maybe) provide scans on demand for lower price when the data can stay available for others to purchase. You can then leave for example the opt out price (which can go down over time) in the description.

In case of a buyer opting for exclusivity he would probably not mind you already sold some of the data, he would probably just be interested to make platform specific products with it and be the only seller of them (have ownership).

So you have all the tools to go al directions here, e.g. communication tools (contact button/form), marketing tools and connection to all popular social media e.g. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Vimeo, Pinterest etc.

No one can guarantee you sell something, but this place has a fare amount of traffic and allot of artist know about this place. Using all the tools here to make your work visible to a larger crowd will make a difference, but if you don't try then you shall never know.

Remember you don't have to confine your data to one place.
This place has many advantages, some may have others.

So, just upload al that cool 3D stuff and see how it goo's, and also make sure you hang out in popular artists/game forums like polycount etc., letting those indies (independent game developers) know your date and services are available here.

Tip: Also upload those images over there.
