The bombard was a small artillery piece used at the beginning of the Hundred Years' War. It was one of the first metal cannons, firing stone or iron cannonballs. Less powerful than the large bombards, it was lighter and more mobile, ideal for attacking walls or sowing panic in enemy ranks. Its appearance marked the beginning of the widespread use of gunpowder in medieval warfare.
