The Lockheed P2V Neptune is an American maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare aircraft developed during World War II. Designed from the ground up specifically for land-based maritime reconnaissance, it made its maiden flight in May 1945 and served well into the late 1970s.Design & Features: A twin-engine, high-wing aircraft, the Neptune featured a distinctive ventral radar radome, a long tailcone housing a Magnetic Anomaly Detector (MAD), and tip tanks on its wings. Later variants (such as the P2V7) adopted a unique mixed-power arrangement, combining two heavy Wright R-3350 radial piston engines with two auxiliary Westinghouse J34 jet engines under the wings to improve takeoff performance under heavy loads.Operational History: Built for extended range and long-endurance ocean surveillance, it carried a payload of torpedoes, depth charges, rockets, and sonobuoys. It saw extensive service with the US Navy—particularly during the Korean and Vietnam Wars—and was exported to several allied nations, including the French Naval Aviation (Aéronautique navale).Civilian Career: After retiring from military duty, where it was replaced by the Lockheed P-3 Orion, the Neptune enjoyed a long second life as a heavy airtanker converted for firefighting duties across North America.
