The H-39 battleships were the first and most serious version of Germany’s H-class designs, developed in 1937–1939 under Plan Z as enlarged successors to the Bismarck class. Six ships were planned and two were laid down, but construction was halted after the outbreak of World War II. Their planned armament consisted of eight 406 mm (16 in) guns in four twin turrets, twelve 150 mm secondary guns, sixteen 105 mm dual-purpose guns, lighter 37 mm and 20 mm anti-aircraft weapons, six torpedo tubes, and aircraft facilities. Of all the increasingly gigantic H-class concepts, H-39 was the only one that progressed beyond paper—two hulls actually began construction before cancellation.
