History of the SBX-1 ModelDevelopment began in the early 2000s under the U.S. Missile Defense Agency to counter ICBM threats, with Boeing selecting the Blue Marian rig in 2005 for $2.1 billion conversion. Launched in 2006 from Corpus Christi, Texas, it endured typhoons en route to Hawaii, achieving first tracks in 2007. Delays from technical glitches and cost overruns marked its path, but by 2010s trials, it integrated with Ground-Based Midcourse Defense. Today, it's a proven asset from Cold War radar legacies.
Current State of the SBX-1 ModelStationed at Pearl Harbor since 2014, the SBX-1 supports Indo-Pacific exercises like FTX-26, detecting hypersonic threats amid China tensions. Upgrades include AI-enhanced discrimination and drone integration, with mobility allowing repositioning in 48 hours. Maintenance costs $100 million yearly, but it remains irreplaceable for its mobility and power (40 MW generators). Future roles may expand to space domain awareness in evolving missile landscapes.
