Description

The Daily News Building is a 476ft (145m) tall sksyscraper in New York City. Designed by Raymond Hood and John Mead Howells for the newspaper of the same name, the building stands on the eastern portion of Midtown's 42nd St. The Daily News Building represents a historical shift in American architecture, as it is seen as one of the most notable precursors to buildings of the Modernist or International Style. Completed in 1930, this skyscraper differentiates itself with more austere ornamentation, and a simpler massing that features much boxier, flatter setbacks than most art deco buildings of the era. While the architects aimed to make the building as functional as possible, they were still limited by the zoning regulations that required the building to setback as it rose from the street, giving it an art deco look. For many years, the building stood prominently with its pristine white brick and clean, straight lines over a mostly gritty, industrial part of Manhattan.
