Tip Ton RE — Sustainable Design Meets Dynamic Comfort

The Tip Ton RE chair from Vitra is a contemporary reinterpretation of a celebrated design classic that blends ergonomic innovation with sustainable materials. Originally introduced in 2011, the Tip Ton was conceived by British designers Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby to encourage a healthier sitting posture through its distinctive forward‑tilt feature. In 2020, Vitra updated the concept with the Tip Ton RE: a version made entirely from post‑consumer recycled plastics — including material sourced from Germany’s “Yellow Bag” recycling system — making it both environmentally responsible and visually distinctive.

One of the chair’s defining characteristics is its dual posture design: from a normal seated position, the Tip Ton RE can tip slightly forward, a motion that helps activate the spine and core muscles and enhances comfort during extended sitting. Its moulded form — free of mechanical components and reinforced with glass fibres for stability — makes the chair robust enough for everyday use, stackable up to four units high and suitable for both indoor and seasonal outdoor settings. The proportions — roughly 50.9 cm wide, 55.5 cm deep and 78.6 cm tall — make it a versatile seat for dining, workspace or casual environments.

When scaled down to 1:12 for miniatures or interior models, the Tip Ton RE becomes approximately 4.2 cm × 4.6 cm × 6.6 cm, with a mini seat height of ~3.8 cm, preserving its expressive silhouette and ergonomic character in tiny form. Produced by Vitra, a brand with a long legacy of design excellence, Tip Ton RE stands at the intersection of contemporary aesthetics, everyday functionality and sustainable design practice — proving that thoughtful furniture can be both beautiful and environmentally responsible, whether in full size or as a meticulously crafted miniature.
