The Iconic Structure of the CH29 Sawbuck Chair
The CH29 Sawbuck Chair, designed in 1953 by Hans Wegner, showcases his mastery of geometric precision and functional simplicity. Named for its distinctive “X” or sawbuck-style base, the chair combines visual intrigue with stability, exemplifying Wegner’s philosophy of integrating structure and form seamlessly.
Its elegantly angled backrest and gently contoured seat provide comfort while retaining a minimalist aesthetic. The crossed wooden legs not only ensure strength but also give the chair a sculptural, dynamic presence, making it both a functional object and a piece of design art.
Today, the CH29 Sawbuck Chair is produced by Carl Hansen & Søn. Its innovative geometry, ergonomic comfort, and timeless Scandinavian design continue to make it a celebrated icon in modern interiors, admired for both craftsmanship and aesthetic clarity.
Hans Wegner:
Hans Wegner (1914–2007) was one of the most influential figures in Danish modern design and a master of chair craftsmanship. Trained as a cabinetmaker before studying at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts, Wegner developed a deep respect for wood construction and joinery. Over the course of his career, he designed more than 500 chairs, many of which became enduring icons of 20th-century furniture design.
Wegner’s philosophy centered on simplicity, functionality, and structural honesty. He believed that a chair should be beautiful from every angle and that comfort should arise naturally from well-considered proportions and craftsmanship. His most celebrated work, the Wishbone Chair, exemplifies his ability to refine traditional forms into modern expressions. Through organic curves and meticulous joinery, Wegner elevated everyday seating into sculptural art.
Working with manufacturers such as Carl Hansen & Søn, Wegner helped establish Denmark as a global leader in modern furniture design. His legacy lies in his dedication to quality materials, human-centered ergonomics, and timeless aesthetics. Today, his designs remain widely produced and admired, symbolizing the warmth and refinement of Scandinavian modernism.
