After visiting a model railway exhibition recently I decided it was time to design and make some cable drums, looking around there are quite a few you can buy without any cable so I decided to design some with and without cable.
Cable drums come in all sorts of sizes so I decided on three drums. I choose the following sizes - 2m Diameter, 1.6m Diameter, and 1m Diameter.
I also designed these to give the look of being made out of wood, The hole through the drums is 0.8mm (approx 22 swg) but may need drilling out after printing. If mounting on a cable drum jack I would recommend using some wire to go through the drum as it's more rigid. I will be designing some Drum Holders shortly to go with these models
These items have been designed at OO gauge, 1/76.2 scale. For HO Gauge print at 87%, 1/87 Scale, For O Gauge UK print at 175%, 1/43.5 scale, For O Gauge International print at 158%, 1/48 scale, For N Gauge UK print at 51.5%, 1/148 Scale, (Caution: I have not test printed this in N gauge scale).
Examples in the photos was printed on an AnyCubic Photon Resin Printer
I recommend printing these items on a 3D resin printer to get the best resolution print, for larger scales you might be able to print them on a filament printer (Not tested). As per normal with my designs, there is a balance between accuracy and printability, hopefully not affecting the design of the model too much.
The main resins I use for printing can be found with my affiliated links below. I use AnyCubic Water Washable Resin for most of my items but use AnyCubic ABS Like Resin for anything that needs to be stronger and tougher.
