The type 89, 40 calibre is a Japanese anti—aircraft gun introduced before World War II.It was the standard heavy anti-aircraft gun of the Imperial Japanese Navy during the war.The Type 89 was adopted by the IJN on February 6, 1932. It was the main anti-aircraft gun on new aircraft carriers, battleships and cruisers, most often installed in twin gun mounts.It was also used as the main armament of the Matsu-class destroyers.In the 1930s and 1940s, the IJN ships were modernized and the old anti-aircraft guns were replaced with the Type 89.
