DESCRIPTION

Form EmblemThe emblem historically arose and exists within the boundaries of fine art: in drawing, engraving, relief image. But it differs from other pictorial forms in that it is an extremely generalized pictorial image, the meaning of which is much wider than the content of the object (a group of objects, their details), which represents the image itself. For example, the iris flower is the emblem of the city of Florence, the double-headed eagle is the emblem of the Byzantine, Austro-Hungarian and Russian empires, the pentagram is the emblem of the Pythagoreans, the eight-pointed cross is the emblem of the Order of Malta. “In this, the meaning of the emblem is close to the symbol. However, unlike pictorial symbols and allegories, as well as from the general concept of a sign, the emblem combines the abstract and the concrete in a peculiar compositional form. The symbol does not directly depict the designated phenomenon, but only points to it; it does not have a visible resemblance to it. Iconic (pictorial) signs are similar to the depicted object. Allegory informs about what is denoted indirectly, with the help of symbolic attributes. Iconic signs, symbols and attributes are combined in the emblem, and thanks to such a connection, a new meaning arises, the ability to designate a phenomenon of a more complex order than the image of one specific object or even an abstract concept. The emblem is both concrete and abstract. Moreover, in the emblem, as a rule, objects that are not connected in everyday life acquire new compositional connections. This gives the emblems a particularly capacious metaphorical meaning.
