What is this model?
This chess set is based on the now traditional looking chess set/pieces seen around the world in homes and tournaments around the world and has been around since the mid 19th century. While most of the designs seen here are all based on the actual chess pieces, the knight/horse is based on a number of references, combined with my own design style.
Why is it worth buying it? How can it be used?
This set is your traditional looking set, but why should I buy it compared to the others? When examining other chess sets, there are so many various looks and styles, some based on characters, others based on other cultural interpretations of the ancient game, and others on the chess pieces we associate with the game today, and that is what my version is, however with my own personal touch, especially with slight variations in the design such as the Knight. This is specifically true when it comes to realism, as no matter where you view it, it looks as real as possible, making it possible to use in many different ways and in many environments.
For this chess set, I have created realistic looking material, by using a variety of texturing nodes (depending on the specific material) such as Metallic BSDF, Glass BSDF and Principled BSDF in conjunction with creating simple to understand but very effective and realistic procedural texturing nodes. These additional nodes include:
One key difference compared to many others on CGTrader, is this chess set also includes a digital chess timer. This design is based on a number of different real world versions. The exterior is based on the older style analogue timer, but the centre piece timer is inspired by newer digital versions with the colours of green and red my own input, like those seen used in traffic lights.
As with most chess sets, this can be used anywhere and in any environment, either in the background or as a centrepiece of a room. The current arrangement is set up as you would from the start, but as each piece is separate, they can be arranged in any way you wish to use.
Apart from the material used in this file, three other materials I have also used that can be downloaded separately. They are:
One of the major factors you should buy is that I provide two versions in Blender,
This setup is formatted to ensure you have the choice that you feel comfortable with, whether you love the model but want to make small changes to the overall textures using the nodes provided to suit your project needs, or leave the baked textures in place where you can use the model in your project as is.
In addition to this, if you don't have blender, this project contains various project file formats to use in various other 3D Programs and these details can be seen below.
How the file system works and what is contained within
Within the downloadable folder/s, I have included two different blender folders, one indicating its procedural and the other baked.
Within the Procedural Zip Folder (Metal_Chess_Procedural) you will find a file called (Metal_Chess_Procedural) all the textures/materials are included, using a wide variety of procedural nodes. This will mean you can modify any of these nodes, to suit your own preferred taste/style specific to your own project needs. This Blender file will suit any level of experience as the node layout is quite simple and easy to follow.
Within this Procedural Folder, a number of specifically created (text) textures are also included. These include:
However, for those who want the ease and comfort of downloading the file without worrying about making changes, all the textures are baked within a separate folder called textures with each texture containing at least 4 different texture layers in 4K (4096 x 4096).
These include:
The Blender file within the baked texture folder (Metal_Chess_Baked) contains these baked materials as .png files. This can be found under the Blender File (Metal_Chess_Baked). To use correctly just download the texture ZIP file, (included within are separate material/texture folders with the names closely matching to the different objects within the blender/other file)
Each object/part within this project, their four texture layers (as mentioned above) are contained in their own folder. These objects below are the folder names and include:
Chess Pieces Black
Chess Pieces White
Bishop
Chessboard
Timer
As well as these two folders which are suited for blender users, I have also contained a separate folder for those who prefer to use other 3D programs. This folder is called Other Files. With this zip folder contains:
