It can be classified as a recreational or competitive board game for two players and is also known as Western Chess or International Chess to distinguish it from its predecessors and other current variants. The current form of the game emerged in southwestern Europe in the second half of the 15th century, during the Renaissance, after having developed from its ancient Persian and Indian origins. Chess belongs to the same family as Xiangqi and Shogi, and currently according to chess historians. (or pt. chess), they all originated from Chaturanga, which was practiced in India in the 6th century. There are many types of chess: Western chess, Turkish chess, Chinese chess (Xiangqi), Arabic chess (Xatranje), Korean chess (Janggi), Japanese chess (Shogi), Indian chess (Chaturaji), Thai chess (Makruk), Indonesian chess and even Ethiopian chess (Senterej). There are many similarities between such games, with all possibly sharing a common origin.
