Ilex Opaca: American HollyIlex Opaca is a species of Holly native to the eastern and South Central United States. It is a medium sized broadleaf evergreen, growing on average between 33-66 ft tall. Its leaves are distinctively less glossy than the European Holly, but otherwise it is fairly similar. It typically grows as an understory tree in moist forests. The wood is used in niche carpentry, and the sap is sometimes used as an herbal tonic; however, the most common use for Ilex Opaca is as an ornamental plant, due to its festive, full evergreen foliage and striking red berries.
