The Typhoon class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, known in the Soviet Union as Project 941 Akula (Russian: translating to “shark”), and designated by NATO as Typhoon. These vessels, with their impressive submerged displacement of 48,000 tonnes, held the distinction of being the largest submarines ever constructed. Their design incorporated ample living quarters, ensuring comfort for a crew of 160 during extended submerged missions spanning several months.
In March 2012, the Russian Navy opted to discontinue its Typhoon modernization initiative, citing the exorbitant costs involved. It was asserted that the expense of refurbishing a single Typhoon equated to the construction expenses for two new Borei-class submarines.
However, the service life of the Dmitriy Donskoi was not destined to be prolonged indefinitely. February 2023 marked the end of its tenure, as it was decommissioned, drawing the curtains on a chapter of naval history characterized by innovation and strategic significance.
