The cookware is part of a soldier's personal equipment and consists of various containers (pots, bowls, pans) that can be used for eating and, depending on their design, also for transporting or preparing food. In 1931, a field canteen model was developed that was later named Kochgeschirr 31 (cookware 31). It was suitable for cooking and had a capacity of 1.7 liters. This model remained in use with only minor changes in the German Armed Forces, the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW), and the former National People's Army (NVA) of the GDR. The modification of the German Armed Forces and former NVA cookware consisted of an additional container that was inserted into the large main container, turning the former 2-piece cookware into a 3-piece set.
