The Obrez is a crude pistol-like firearm created by cutting down a Mosin–Nagant rifle, a modification that became associated with the turmoil following the Russian Revolution. The word “obrez” means “cut down” in Russian, referring to the shortened barrel and often drastically reduced wooden stock. Despite its small size, the weapon still fires the powerful 7.62×54mmR rifle cartridge, giving it extremely heavy recoil, a massive muzzle blast, and very limited accuracy. Obrez rifles were commonly improvised by irregular fighters, criminals, and partisan groups who wanted a concealable weapon with tremendous stopping power. While impractical for precision shooting and uncomfortable to fire, the Obrez became a recognizable symbol of revolutionary and criminal imagery in Eastern Europe and Russia due to its brutal simplicity and distinctive appearance.
