The 20 mm pansarvärnsgevär m/42, commonly known as the Carl Gustaf 20 mm recoilless rifle, was a Swedish-developed anti-tank weapon introduced during World War II to address the growing ineffectiveness of traditional anti-tank rifles. Unlike earlier designs such as the Pansarvärnsgevär m/21, the m/42 used a recoilless firing system that vented gases rearward, significantly reducing recoil and allowing a powerful 20 mm projectile to be fired from a relatively portable platform. This made it more practical for infantry use while still providing improved armor penetration against lightly armored vehicles and fortified positions. Operated by a small crew, the weapon balanced mobility and firepower and marked an important transition from conventional anti-tank rifles to more advanced infantry anti-armor systems. Although rapidly evolving tank armor would soon demand even more powerful solutions, the m/42 represents a key step in the development of modern recoilless weapons.
