High-fidelity digital duplicate of a real world CANDU (Canadian Uranium Deuterium) nuclear fuel element, designed for film, or engineering visualization. (50 cm long). This asset is a nuclear fuel bundle for CANDU reactors (CANFLEX design). 43 fuel elements (tubes filled with uranium fuel pellets). The uranium inside undergoes fission when struck by a neutron inside a CANDU reactor. This reaction yeilds energy (heat) used to heat up the surrounding coolant in the primary heat transport system, which is then passed through specialized heat exchangers called steam generators for the production of electricity to the power grid. 12-13 of these bundles are laid out in series axially inside each pressure tube, where ~480 of these pressure tubes compose the reactor core. Heavy water (D2O) is used to moderate the neutrons since these bundles do not use enriched uranium, and to cool the bundles at all times. Powerful pumps are required to work 24/7 to keep the coolant circulating around these bundles. A loss of flow may create localized boiling and lead to fuel damage and the escape of radiologically dangerous isotopes into the coolant circuit. Even when the neutron chain reaction is shut down via control rod insertion, bundles must be kept cool due to the decay heat they continue to produce for dozens of years (to avoid a meltdown). The dire cinematic implications of this information make these bundles a fascinating set piece for a film or series!
