The menorah ( Hebrew: מְנוֹרָה , literally lamp) is a seven-branched lampstand or seven-branched candlestick (seven-branched candelabrum) that, according to the Bible , was located in the Tabernacle of Meeting during the Exodus , and then in the Jerusalem Temple until the destruction of the Second Temple by the Romans during the First Jewish War . It is one of the oldest symbols of Judaism and Jewish religious attributes. The menorah symbol became widespread throughout the Roman Empire from the 1st century and likely symbolized the anticipation of the messiah . Every Jewish family had a hanukkiah — a Hanukkah candlestick in the form of a nine-branched menorah—and as a result, they became mass-produced in the 18th and 19th centuries.
