It swallows its prey, but can be defeated from the inside through offensive magic or by externally pushing the trapped victim further into the mimic, which stimulates a gag reflex and stops biting the victim. Chest that appear suspicious can be checked for being a mimic with the spell: Mikheit that has a fail chance of one percent which is why Frieren knowingly gives every chest a try.
