This medieval siege unit, the mangonel was incredibly dangerous to use and slow to rewind. The payoff was the fact that it could chuck heavy rocks hard enough to penetrate ship hulls, palisades and many a chestplate. It used the tension of wound-up ropes for the launch, contrary to its more popular cousin, the trebuchet, which used counterweights.
