Description

[BACKGROUND]

The bicycle has been around for hundreds of years. It was at the center of one of the earliest technological races in human history. Over the hundreds of years since its creation, the bicycle has remained fairly unchanged in its most basic form. As a bond of human power and technology, the bicycle enabled humans to travel far beyond what they had been able to previously by foot. As with all things regarding speed, human became obsessed with pushing the limits of both technology and human ability. This mentality led to the racing of bicycles. 2014 marked the 101st edition of the Tour de France and the 107th edition of Paris-Roubaix, two of greatest cycling races of all time. With Such a long history of cycling as a sport, it is clear that it is unlikely the sport will ever disappear.

[VELODROME DEFINED] velodrome (ˈviːləˌdrəʊm; ˈvɛl-) n 1. (Cycle Racing) an arena with a banked track for cycle racing

[THE PROJECT]

Velodrome 2114 is a visualization of a sporting atmosphere in the future rather than the present. With time, all things change and Architecture is no exception. As time has progressed there has been a clear contrast in two major directions of progressive architecture. The first mimicking the natural world and its organic forms and the second with its sharply designed edges and sleek facades. For Velodrome 2114, the second approach was chosen in order to mirror the technological advancements within cycling itself. Over the past decade, racing bicycles have become the centerpiece of aerodynamic and structural studies. So much so, companies known for creating the fastest cars on the planet have become involved. However, looking past all the advancements of cycling, the most basic shape in a bicycle frame is the triangle and thus it is a centerpiece in the design of Velodrome 2114. As humans we will always look to compete whether it is in technology or sports and it is because of this desire for competition that sports will always remain an integral part of human culture. Events such as the Olympics will remain and therefore, there will be a need for new facilities at every Olympiad for each discipline of sport. Thus we have Velodrome 2114.
