The arsenal was built in 1787 during the reign of Charles III, King of Spain. The arsenal was designed to resemble a church in order to fool the pirates. All walls three meters and a foot thick, except one in the back along the river with only one meter thick. This was done so that if there was an explosion it would explode into the river, thus limiting the potential damage.
