License type switch

Discussion started by iterateCGI

Hello CGtrader team,

Here's a little site suggestion.

A while ago I proposed to integrate a system that would allow products to have two prices,
a commercial application price and a non commercial (for consumers) price.

So if someone would pay the lower amount he would not get the commercial license,
instead there would be a non commercial license attached and vise versa.

I also suggested that this would maybe be better then the make offer button and that it could maybe replace it, but now I’m thinking something different.

Maybe its better to just integrate an option to switch license type individually inside the make offer function?

So what I generally do now (regularly) when someone makes a lower offer is contacting them and ask them if they agree this would be for a non commercial license.

In almost all case they do agree because they where not planing anything commercialy anyways.

So basically the ones that make price offers usually are the ones that are going to use the stuff for personal projects anyways.

Now the problem is I then have to go to the product and switch the license type, wait for the transaction to be done and then go back and switch the license back to commercial type.

Meanwhile risk losing clients because when they would be viewing the product during this time in between this type of transaction they would see a non commercial license attached (temporary) not knowing that it in fact this product would be for commercial uses.

So a button to switch license type individually at that point for that give customer would be awesome.

I do not see the sense.
No one can guarantee that a person who has bought a non-commercial version will not use it for commercial purposes.
Nothing that does not prevent the buyer contacting the seller directly with a request to reduce the personal price.
I had several contacts - students, not commercial projects.
I almost always go to a meeting.
In other cases I see no reason to complicate the engine of the store.

I really do think we need to make a distinction between professional users hoe make money with the work and users hoe would use it for hobby or personal projects. The first category is estimating the cost versus what he can make with it. The second category is just balancing out the price versus the enjoyment he will get from working with the material (this category would not pay 100+ dollars for 3D models). I believe we will widen market if we make the distinction and support the two different uses. Indeed actors hoe want to invest themselves minimally and earn maximally from work done by others are always going to be around. Personally I believe they are a minority, most people have a moral compass and like to support the common good, they have respect for someone else work and get pride in also doing some themselves.

Non commercial licensing makes perfect sense and i don't know why two major marketplaces still don't offer such possibility. More and more marketplaces offers non commercial licenses now. I think CGT should take initiative in their hands and introduce dual licensing. Then TS most likely would follow, because it seems that they like to copycat CGT lately :]

@iterateCGI, i think introduction of proper non commercial licensing instead of mixing it with price offer, would be preferable, because in the latter case that option might go unnoticed by buyers and also it could make a some confusion.

@DUST, yes, no one can guarantee buyer won't abuse licensing, but on the other hand no one can guarantee that he won't choose to search for pirated "free" version of your or similar model. Those who don't care about licensing, usually aren't willing to spend a penny on a models if he can get them for free. I think there is a lot of people who won't use illegally obtained models because of moral constraints, even for personal projects. And for those people to pay for commercial license might be bit too much when all they want is to use model privately. Why don't give them a chance? That even might be a next big boost in sales, especially since hugely discounted sales became everyday norm thanks to desperate actions from CGT.

To CGT team - i'm all for non commercial licences! Give them to us or at least explain your position about it.

In any case, you just calm yourself down with the idea of the moral purity of the buyer.
If you find your model in a commercial product - you will find out who and what type of license purchased your model?

I believe that my prices are balanced at a price, according to the labor costs and estimated sales. Therefore, my license is "custom type" - I release buyers from any conditions of use. And I sleep peacefully. :-)

Where i can read your license? Or i need to buy model first, to know what license you wrote? Or i need to write you and wait answer? The intellectual property, where original right holders are other companies, how can you release buyers from any problems caused later by companies? I don't understand something? :)

Of course it should be optional whether seller chooses to offer commercial, non-commercial or both licenses with any of his models. It would be very bad thing if offering of non-commercial license would be enforced. That potentially could scare some sellers off the marketplace. If you don't like idea of non-commercial licensing, you should be given an option to ignore it or at least an option to set equal price on both types of licenses. And those who see benefits of non-commercial license, may use it at full potential. Nothing to be affraid of ;]

To HQ3DMOD:
Check attentively product page.
Under the "buy" button there is a link to the license type.
I do not release the buyer from the claims of trademark owners (third parties). This is the buyer's concern.
I make the buyer free in their actions with my model.
