Encouraging price offers

Discussion started by gonzo-3d

Hi everyone!

I guess that a few of us sell models not only on CGTrader but also on other sites. Lately some sites have been pushing sellers to equalize prices so that they can guarantee that customers will find the lowest price on their site.

I think CGTrader is a fair site to sellers and I am happy to sell here, and I am a fan of the price negotiation tool. Perhaps there is a way to indicate potential buyers that a seller is open to, or actively encouraging negotiations, as a way to fight against the price enforcement of other sites. Either a badge, a small message above the product description or anything of the sort.

I want to sell my models at a lower price here, and I'm sure many others do too, and in the current state of the 3d modeling industry I can't afford to sell only in one place. I'm guessing many others are in this situation as well. Does anybody like/dislike this idea?

I mean, I only sell here on CGT and things are fine...

Like, selling here isn't my main income source so its not an issue. Maybe a badge for 'Trusted Sellers' or yes, more encouragement of price negotiations. However on the flip side, I'd be more likely spending time talking prices, than selling models.

Yeah, I've struggled with that in the past, maybe there should be a slightly more controlled kind of negotiation. Still, often those negotiations lead to interesting interactions and fair prices too...

I agree they lead to fair prices for sure, but they could also lead people to expect prices to be lowered which would be a pain. Still, I'm open to ideas, and you don't really know until you've tested these things. Maybe only people who have spent X amount on models here on CGT can negotiate prices, but then again, that limits other users so I'm not sure. Open to ideas as always though!

I think the price negotiation is a nice feature, but I don't think it is a good idea to encourage it, because eventually people will get used to it and they will ALWAYS ask for a lower price, and they might even get upset if they don't get any discount. Also it would be very annoying for the designers to have to write back and forth with the buyers every time to secure a sale.

Pretty much what I said and I agree. I dont want to spend more time messaging about prices rather than actually selling models.

I have 2 thoughts:

1) I think sellers should price their products based on what they expect to get. This means that a seller can offer a lower price on a site that gives a higher commission (such as CGTrader) or raise the price on a site that gives a much lower commission (such as a TurboSquid).
However, some sites (again, such as TurboSquid) tend to price the models at "market value", whether this means way-too-high prices or lower prices to match other sites.
In other words, you may not have control of the pricing at some sites.

2) I don't think sellers should compete on price because there's always someone who will undercut you. Instead, sellers should compete on quality and features.

And I turned off the "negotiate price" feature here at CGTrader since people were offering me $5 for a product priced at $40. I could maybe give them a 50% discount/ $20, but $5 is way too low.

Initially i thought too about counteracting TS actions with price offer, but as others already mentioned, that probably would backfire and we would have yet another wave of mass price dropping. I'd rather remove my models from TS, than compromize prices on CGT - it simply not worth it. I wonder why because of shortsighting and dumb decisions of one marketplace, we have to ruin our experience on other marketplaces?
