Selling 3d models for peanuts

Discussion started by elok3dart

I rememember when I started to sell my 3dmodels many years ago for 25$ and other pro 3d artists told me time will come where We will all work for peanuts ,if 3d modelers like me sell for such low price.

I guess those time became reality and I thought 4$ is lowest price on cgtrader, and there are sellers who sell for 1 dollar which is easy could be sold at least for 25$ minimum

Enlighten me pro 3d modelers what is going on with 3d stock markets.Thank you in advance for your reply :)

This is a long, philosophical discussion about anything from trends, supply & demand, changing times and tech to humanity itself.
As someone who is exclusively buying and not selling 3d models, there are more issues than just "AI is bad" - and I also see a light at the end of the tunnel...one that isn't an oncoming freight train ;)
- And just to be clear: These observations are NOT a criticism of any particular creator or the OP. Just general observations.

• Overload of crap models taken from games:
Mind you, I mostly purchase car-related assets - but that particular segment is flooded with models ripped from games and poorly converted into assets. This is not an AI issue, but simply people being lazy and/or wanting to make a quick buck.

• Overload of the same type of models:
It's great to have several versions of a particular model to choose from, but - at least in the automotive segment - there seems to be an overrepresentation of certain car models and brands. Creating models that are needed instead of doing what everyone else is doing, might help.

• Not standing out:
See above (doing the same as everyone else). But in addition, there are very few artists comparatively who create models that stand out re quality, usability or creativity.
If you focus on standing out more, I am sure that will help.

• Poor quality: There is just a lot of crap models out there. I have purchase hundreds of models on CGT a other platforms, and while I have become relatively good at spotting poor quality, I am still surprised at times by the sheer lack of basic quality of many of the models I have. From poor topology to bad textures or simply poorly structured files.
Basic, good craftsmanship builds loyal clients. There is a reason why some of the top players in certain segments have been around for many years: They may not deliver the best of one particular model/theme compared to other offers, but they are consistent in quality and their assets are easy to work with and never gives you extra grief.

• Ignore the AI hysteria: Yes, it will kill off a lot of small businesses, and yes it will - and has already - change the way we see creativity in general and 3D specifically.
But it is an absolute waste of time to debate these things, because it will not change anything. Not a single thing.
Instead, focus on building loyal clients, cater to them - and listen to what is needed in the market instead of "just making another model because [trend, habit, comfort etc]".

There are two types of clients overall IMO:
Those who are not interested in HOW the end product is made (and will happily use AI to get there), and those who like the process or NEED to have custom assets made.
I happen to belong to the latter group, and I am sure I am far from the only one.
Sure, I use AI for many things - especially smaller projects for which it would make zero sense spending money or time on 3D work - but for my automotive art, I only use it to generate ideas or on rare occasions some distant backgrounds etc.

For every trend there is a counter-trend. It has always been like this, and it always will be like this.
AI will be great for certain things in the long run - and it will suck for other things.
Some people will follow the AI trend to the bitter end and THEN (possibly) change their ways, and others have already decided to not go the AI route.
You can not sell many 3d models to the first group - but I believe there is a lot of potential in the second group; and while they (myself included) absolutely love getting great models for little money, we/I also have no issues paying more for quality assets.

My two cents.

And the site makes the prices even more peanut with the practically permanent discount lasting from the 1th day of september.
Is it really necesarry to have 20-25 days from month up to 50% or 70% sale? I only hope that more and more artists will disable discounts in their settings.

The discount situation on cgt is absolutely ridiculous. I don't know why they are bothering with the countdowns if it's never more than 24 hours before the next discount event. Just make it permanent discounts all year round and be done with it.

We discussed this some time ago: I think it's very clear that CGT is "preparing the ship" for a sale. There is no other logical explanation for having constant sales, as this is the fastest way to erode the value of the assets they/you sell. IMO the sales are meant to boost revenue and hence value of CGT. Sadly, this comes at the cost of creators.

If no changes are made to copyright and the scraping of data for AI training, then most likely no human will be able to add something of value to the internet within few years, just be paying for a subscription to Google, Amazon, Netflix or Disney+. Those will generate on the fly whatever music, game, movie, video or 3D world, just whatever you prompt it (even software, but then probable meaningless).

Maybe there will be creators that still create (for the love of it) and feed those machines, but if it is any good, people will prompt it and play it in their subscription (results will look just slightly different then your creations, “probably better”). Chances you earn something on real creations will probable be same as winning the lottery.

Ultimately, the AI’s from those big corporations will be so good at predicting and generating what people like (they are collecting all the metrics) that adding something to internet “you/me created” becomes completely meaningless, in fact, would be so dull that no one will even look at it.

Right now, I see myself as one of these (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTZYqODo7o0).
Having some hopes a miracle will happen and copyright gets saved/restored, but those hopes are fading rapidly.

Did you sleep under a rock for the past 10 years? ;) I will not gonna into details as those things were discussed to death many times before, but i can give you a brief summary. Other sellers might chime in and add their 2 cents.

1. oversaturation of market happened. You can barely find a category that would not have thousands upon thousands of models in offer.
2. democratization of 3D software happened. With 3D being ever more easily accessible and with free and open source programs like Blender getting better, every kid and their dogs are now making 3D models and hopping to earn couple bucks fur ice cream and coke.
3. discount epidemic happened. Marketplaces started drastically compete with each other for thinner and thinner customer traffic.
4. generative AI happened. You don't need to learn 3D for years now, you don't need to sit and work on single model for weeks or months now. All you need is to press a button that would launch prompt generating AI, which would feed those prompts to other AI that spits out fully ready 3D models in minutes and seconds. The quality is still a bit shit, but this is rapidly improving and the marketplaces already flooded with that AI slop.

So yeah, $25 is now considered a pretty hefty price for a 3D model. It's getting harder and harder to find a buyer for that price and soon it might be almost impossible. Now get back under your rock, there's not much hope over horizon.
