I want to sell our studio models, Please give me some advices. :)

Hi everybody,

Here is the thing, I have operated my own animation company for three years, we have 20 artists here, during the past time, we produced many projects relate to computer graphic, like 3D animation TV series, architectural presentation, CG advertising, game, and short film. I didn't mean to be a multi-industry media company, but we just had to working hard and eat anything come to me to feed ourselves, we are still living but in a hectic way. on the other hand, good thing is we found we accumulated lots of hi-quality 3D models.  most of them is architectural models, external and internal furniture and electric appliances, we also have animals, human, vehicles, medical equipments, etc. and we also have the copyright to sell some of them.

This year our market has dropped a little, so I'm wondering if I can sell them on the internet.  but I never buy or sell models here.  my question is do you think selling models and textures will make a big benefit to our company? do you really earn money on this business?

At the beginning, I panned to build my own website shop with logo and own domain to sell my hundreds of models and textures. but this will cost me hundreds dollars and three weeks to built it, may be $150 plus to maintain it per month. and also spend money on advertising it. benefit is I can have my own brand, if this works, I can expand this business, make and sell more models.

or I can sell them here or other similar websites like turbosquid.com. but I have to face to many low price sellers. and also pay for the website.

I believe the artists here are not only CG artists, you must have business sense, Please kindly give me some advices, what should I do now? is it worth for me to spend times and upload models on the net, or build my own website.  Thanks for telling me anything. I would like to hear your words. Thank you.

ps: I'm not a native english speaker, so pardon me if I make you confused :P  Thanks.

Hi Burak, Thank you for your comments, I'm not sure how many I can sell per month on turbosquid if I upload 200 models, Because just 2or 3 models means nothing to a company : ) To trade it as a business I have to calculate the balance of investment. Keep in touch.

If your models are high quality (which I'm sure they are) they will be bought, however do not expect to make a large sum of money from this. It really depends on the models you have, how sought after they are and the price you're asking for them. this is a magic formula that any seller is looking for. One thing is for sure thou, if you keep your models on your hard drive you're not making anything, if you put them up for sale here and on turbosquid you'll be making some money and last I checked, some is better than nothing. For those 200 models you mentioned I'm sure you already have quite a few preview pics, so you'll waste no additional time on rendering those, thus all you have to do is to upload them on the site, simple as that. If it were a one man job, this would sure take some time to upload and set up all the individual products, however considering you have quite a large team then this is just a walk in the park, there is no reason whatsoever for you not to go down this road considering you have the rights to sell them. All I can say is good luck.

Compared to working on TV or film or even game contracts you will make very little selling stock 3d - just not in the same ball park.
