Tips for Rendering White on White

Discussion started by 3DCargo

Hey all,

Does anyone have any good tips for rendering white objects on white backgrounds? Usually I have a stark white backdrop but in this case I'm losing the details - Anyone have a good reference of a way they resolved this issue? I tried to put a gradient grey/white backdrop but it looks a bit 'muddy'.

Here is the model in question:

Many thanks.

Why do you render white on white in the first place? First of all you can bake ambient occlusion, try out textured floor like white marble or b&w floor tiles and maybe use hard light with constrasty shadows.

thanks @modellerofmemes, I did try a dark grey tile floor as per my reference. I didnt really like it so I went back to White to match my previous products (I would prefer consistency). After playing with it a bit I think ill go with a Black Studio environment. Let me know what you think.

Your black studio looks much better than other variants. I would stick with that. It's most important that product would stand from background and grab visitor's attention. To strive for consistency with your other products is a good thing, but if that's hinders your assets visibility, it's better to dismiss consistency.

@LemonadeCG @trimitek, thanks for the input! Im going to play with it a bit more to see if I can pull off the white on white before returning to the black. I received this feedback on TS which I think is a valid response also so now Its got me thinking... "To be honest.. I don't think you losing detail on your white on white background. On the black you completely lost detail to your chair. The shadows between the opening really bring out the detail on your char.. Don't use black unless your doing a scene that has lighting".

If that reply was from TS support you should consider that they are biased. The consistency they are striving for can be a trap in cases like yours. Just take a screenshot on a random page in search and put your thumbnail in whatever place you like - do the same with white on white and white on black variant and see for yourself which one will attract your attention more.

You can also take a look at the first pages of TS search (best match) with the top rated models - only ~30% of them are on a white background..

@trimitek, that comment was from a 3d modeller. I personally strive for consistency however someone else suggested using a falloff and that works quite well. im going to tweak it more next week. I think you need either something like this

Or something like this

I don't have textures, but you'll find a lot of PBR floor tiles and marble, I'm sure.
