selling on other marketplaces

Discussion started by Polymath-Maniac

Hello everybody.

I was wondering, is there anybody who has experience selling on 3d export?
Not that i am planning on leaving cgtrader, this will remain my preferred marketplace and is likely to stay my main base of operations for the foreseeable future.

But i like having a backup, just in case anything were to happen to cgtrader. Beats having to start from square 1 and it would not be the first time that something happened to a 3d model marketplace.
Currently, i have turbosquid as back up site, but i kinda want to get rid of that for a while. And i think most people here can understand why......

Anyway, i have a few models uploaded there at 3d export, but unlike here, it is not selling.
Could be because i only uploaded a few models but is there anybody with better a experience?

Also is there anybody with experience with highend3d, blendermarket?

If anybody has good experiences with any of these (or alternatives) please let me know. I would love to have a back up that is NOT turbosquid.

Few years ago 3dexport was more or less acceptable place. But last couple years it's just a "backup hole". They doing nothing. So for me uploading models to 3dexport gives no effect in sales. It's just a trash yard.

My only specialization is 3d-printable jewelry and I don't know any alternative to CGtrader at this moment. I've tried to take a look on other sites but...

I was upload only one model on the 3dexport website. And now I think CGTrader is much better than 3dexport.

Sketchfab

+ i think they have the biggest traffic of all the marketplaces and there's big potential to grow. They have many big names backing them up.
+ publishing is easy and even fun, if you're creative person and have some time on your hands.
+ customers are able to inspect your model thoroughly, so they know exactly what they are buying (low chance of chargeback because of quality issues)
+ social aspect is well maintained, so you're able to boost your models publicity, if you're active enough.

- most of the traffic are not paying customers, so the sales are quite lacking from the likes of cgtrader and turbosquid.
- your models may be less secure than they are in traditional marketplaces.
- they don't have centralized payment, each customer are paying to you directly through paypal (bigger fees, big hassle with taxes).
- model management and statistical data is abysmall and they show no interest in improving that.
- private messaging is available only to paid tiers, so you have to carry all the support either publicly, or through e-mail, which is far from ideal

+/- they are forcing discounts and sale events from which you can't opt out, but unlike some other Big Shit marketplace, they're not trying to control your pricing, so you can increase your prices slightly to compensate ever increasing sale-offs.
+/- paid models are mixed with free ones and that may be harder for customers to find what they want.

I'm also tried to sell on cubebrush, but can't recommend it to anyone. It's a very good and modern looking marketplace, but a desert in terms of sales.

Thank you, i was indeed already looking into sketch fab and experimenting with it. At this moment, my conclusion is that it might work for a few of my model, but not for all of them. mostly because the market place is so much different then others.

@LemonadeCG
Looking at "pros and cons" of sketchfab I can say: they are the same parasites as Upwork, Turbosquirt and others. It's my personal opinion.
US style: "everybody should pay for everything and users problems are not our problems". Just wrapped in fizzy-dizzy-wow user interface and with potentially "hackable" 3D-viewer.
I have account on Sketchfab, but I don't use due to same reasons you described in "-", "+/-" and even due to some of "+" ("social aspect"... it's impossible to do JOB and "working on publicity" in the same time. At least for me ).

But again: it's my personal opinion.

My pluses can be someone else's minuses, that's true. I just wrote short review from my point of view and everyone are free to draw their own conclusions from that. Sketchfab definitely has where to improve, but in my opinion, cgtrader, being the king of the hill, is stagnating for some time now. They're not inovating, they not even maintaining the marketplace properly. Site is full of bugs, nothing is working as intended and support are just replying with meaningless automatic messages.

looks like i have to look a bit further, or wait for things to change then.
although, considering that blender is my primary software, blender market might be an option.

no idea about the amount of sales over there though,
but at least i think it is the only market place on the internet with royalties similar to higher than cgtrader. so it is worth a shot i think.

The only advice I MUST give to all 3D atists: Do not publish your models on HIGHEND3D. I had to remove all my models on this site because they no longer pay the artists, they owe me several months of sales, but I had to resign myself.

Thank you, that is very good to know.
that one is now scrapped of my list of possible site.
