Escorts have long proved useful to commanders. They are hard for enemy ships to detect due to their small size and when massed in numbers they can pose a threat to even large ships. The Utility escort was originally used as a mining vessel stripping asteroids for recourses. But their high armour and that they were cheap build and run meant with minor modifications they quickly became widely used for combat operations.
