During the medieval times the family known as Folkunga were one of the absolute strongest in Northern Europe. They did dominate Sweden and did also take part in the many raids and crusades into Eastern Europe. It was the Folkunga Jarl Birger who faced Alexander Nevsky at the battle at Neva River.
