Egyptian cartouches are oval-shaped frames that contain the names of Egyptian pharaohs. The first examples of Egyptian cartouches date back to the Third Dynasty, but they did not become common until the Fourth Dynasty. Cartouches were often carved into stone monuments, but they could also be found on jewelry, weapons, and other objects.

• The letters O, U and W are represented by the same hieroglyph (bird)
• The letters F and V are represented by the same hieroglyph (horned viper)
• The letters I, E and I are represented by the same hieroglyph (single or double feather)
• The letters A, CH, S, Z and H have two hieroglyphs that can either one be used. That can be helpful if you want to make the name longer or shorted to fit the cartouche.
