Best Practices for a Safe PrintMaterial: Use un-dyed (natural) PETG or food-safe PLA.
Hardware: Swap to a stainless steel nozzle.
Finish: Seal the print with a food-contact-safe epoxy, or treat the item as single-use / short-term if left uncoated.
Washing: Wash with lukewarm water and antibacterial soap (do not put PLA/PETG in a dishwasher, as high heat will warp the plastic).
Avoid: Standard ABS (contains styrene), Resin / SLA prints (toxic prior to full cure and rarely food-grade), and cheap colored filaments with unknown chemical dyes or additives.Safe Choices: Use Pure Natural PLA or PETG that is explicitly certified food-contact safe and free of chemical dyes/heavy metals. PETG is ideal because it withstands warmer water for washing without warping.Standard 3D printer nozzles are made of brass, which often contains trace amounts of lead. As filament extrudes through a brass nozzle at high heat, microscopic lead particles can transfer onto the printed plastic.Solution: Print with a stainless steel nozzle or a food-safe coated nozzle (like nickel-plated copper) when producing food-contact items.
