The Marshmallow Sofa was designed in 1956 by George Nelson and became one of the most recognizable pieces of American mid-century modern design. Originally conceived as an experiment in using prefabricated industrial components, the sofa’s round cushions were intended to be mass-produced and mounted onto a simple metal frame.

George Nelson:
George Nelson (1908–1986) was a leading figure in American modern design and a key contributor to mid-century modernism. Trained as an architect at Yale University, Nelson became widely known not only for his furniture designs but also for his influential role as a design director. In 1945, he was appointed Director of Design at Herman Miller, where he helped shape the company’s identity and introduced some of the most iconic designers of the era.
Nelson believed that design should respond to contemporary living needs, blending function, innovation, and clarity. He introduced the concept of modular storage with the Storagewall system and collaborated with talented designers to create pieces such as the Marshmallow Sofa and Coconut Chair. His studio also produced the famous Ball Clock, which became a defining symbol of 1950s modern interiors. Nelson’s approach emphasized problem-solving and simplicity rather than ornamentation.
Beyond furniture, Nelson was a writer and design theorist who advocated for human-centered environments. His leadership at Herman Miller helped establish American modern furniture as globally influential. Today, many of his designs remain in production, celebrated for their playful creativity, practical intelligence, and lasting contribution to modern design history
