Originally known in Japan as Kyatto Ninden Teyandee, this animated series was first produced by Tatsunoko Productions and Sotsu Agency, running for 54 episodes on TV Tokyo between 1990 and 1991. However, when Saban Entertainment acquired the rights for North America in 1991, they faced a unique hurdle: the translations and scripts provided were either missing or completely unusable.

Rather than struggle with broken translations, the production team took a bold, comedic risk. They discarded the original scripts and wrote entirely new dialogue, transforming the show into a fast-paced, fourth-wall-breaking comedy reminiscent of Animaniacs. This decision turned the English version into a beloved cult classic, famous for its relentless pop-culture gags and absurdist humor.

The story unfolds in Little Tokyo, a vibrant mechanical metropolis where feudal Japanese aesthetics collide with futuristic technology. The city is populated by robotic animals and ruled by the eccentric Emperor Fred, though the actual administration falls to Princess Violet and the city council.

If the Samurai Pizza Cats are a well-oiled machine, Polly Esther (known as Pururun in the original Japanese version) is the high-voltage spark plug that keeps it running. While her teammates Guido and Speedy are busy competing for attention or daydreaming, Polly is the one who usually gets the job done—often with a healthy dose of sass and a very short fuse.
