An ax [2] is a chopping tool, often with a short shaft and having a working blade located along the handle.

A variety of an ax called an adze (gentry [3]) has a blade located perpendicular to the handle. With rare exceptions, axes are used for woodworking. From ancient times, the ax was also an ordinary hand cold weapon, much less often it was used as a throwing weapon.
