DESCRIPTION

3D printable bust sculpture of Major Robert “Bob” Alfred Lodge, a highly accomplished United States Air Force fighter pilot and combat leader who served during the Vietnam War. Born in New York City in 1941, Lodge graduated from the United States Air Force Academy in 1964 and later earned a Master of Science degree in aeronautics from Purdue University.

Lodge became an F-105 and F-4D Phantom II pilot and completed two voluntary combat tours in Southeast Asia, flying an impressive 186 combat missions. He served with the 555th Tactical Fighter Squadron and became one of the most respected fighter tactics specialists in the Vietnam theater. As chief of the Fighter Tactics Branch of the 432nd Tactical Reconnaissance Wing, Lodge played an important role in developing tactics and training that helped American pilots counter North Vietnamese MiG fighters.

During his combat career, Lodge was credited with destroying three MiG-21 fighters and received numerous military decorations, including the Silver Star with four Oak Leaf Clusters, the Distinguished Flying Cross with six Oak Leaf Clusters, 37 Air Medals, and the Purple Heart. His tactical knowledge and leadership earned him recognition as one of the outstanding young military leaders of his generation.

On May 10, 1972, during the opening day of Operation Linebacker, Lodge was flying an F-4D Phantom II over North Vietnam when his aircraft was hit by enemy fire north of Hanoi. Knowing that his knowledge of classified tactics and operational capabilities could be compromised if he were captured, Lodge chose not to eject and remained with his crippled aircraft. He was killed when the aircraft crashed, making the ultimate sacrifice to protect his fellow airmen and sensitive military information.

Lodge was later posthumously recognized with the Jabara Award for airmanship for his achievements in air combat tactics. In 2026, legislation was introduced in Congress seeking to posthumously award him the Medal of Honor for his actions during his final mission.
