Upon being hit, the Question Block releases a specific item, most often a Coin, but several can also release a power-up item, such as a Super Mushroom, and turns into an Empty Block afterward. If Mario or another playable character is in their Super form, Question Blocks that yield a Super Mushroom instead yield a different power-up, such as a Fire Flower or a Super Leaf, depending on both the game and level. As with other blocks, a character can also stand on a Question Block as a platform.
