Lithophany Comic Book The Eternaut
The Eternaut is an Argentine science fiction serial created by screenwriter Héctor Germán Oesterheld (1919-1978) and cartoonist Francisco Solano López (1928-2011). Published in Hora Cero Semanal from 1957 to 1959, it had numerous sequels and reissues.
The plot centers on an alien invasion of Earth via a toxic snowstorm that wipes out most of the population, and the resistance of survivors in Buenos Aires. Its protagonist is Juan Salvo, the Eternauta, who, in an exercise in metafiction, narrates what happened to Oesterheld.
The comic is considered one of the most important in the country and in Latin America. Its 2015 Fantagraphics Books edition for the United States received three Eisner Award nominations and won in the category of Best Newspaper Comics Collection or Archival Project.
In early 2020, the streaming platform Netflix announced the international adaptation of The Eternaut.
The series was released in April 2025 and became Netflix's third most-watched series globally.
